Excelling in Keeping the Law (4)
Matthew 5:19-20 19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach [them], the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
Yesterday we saw that we need to excel so as not to lose our spiritual rank. Today we will be looking at the third reason why we need to excel in keeping the law. (3) You must make a difference in your character (Vs 20.) Jesus said in verse 20, that “except your righteousness shall exceed [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven”.
Jesus did not want anyone to defend their lawless lifestyle because of wrong examples from the Pharisees and the Scribes. He didn’t want to allow negative and helpless comparisons to thrive. Many today have good excuses for breaking the law. You will hear things like even my pastor drinks. I am better than those going to church. You must not compete with wrong people in doing wrong. Matthew5: 43-46, …46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the publicans so? You are called to make a difference.
Let others be the ones to be compromising. How can an unbelievable be more faithful than a believer? How can your light be that deem that darkness is almost mistaken for light? How can an unbeliever seem to have a better moral life than a child of God? Why is it that the Church is rather copying from the world? We are copying indecent dressing in the name of fashion, bad character, and so on. So how can the world learn from us?
- Thank You Father for a new day and Your word
- Teach me Father not to compromise when it comes to sin.
- Help me Lord to live a life of faithfulness
- Dear Lord, help to stay righteous when it comes to dressing.
